how many backgrounds of photographs?

people in background

Have you ever wondered how many backgrounds of photographs you are in? How many saved programs and yearbooks people have with your name or photo in it. What about how many people think about you on a daily basis? How many people cannot forget something you said to them, whether it had a positive or negative affect on them. How many peoples lives have been changed because of you. How many people wonder if you even remember them. The people in your life that moved away, do they still think about you in the same way you think about them? Do they remember you? How many grade school friends still have the notes they kept that you passed in class. How many parents of those friends still remember the slumber parties you attended at their house. How many people do you pass by every single day and not speak to, but they know exactly who you are.

Sometimes these things amaze me. I'm a small town girl and sometimes I think my view of the world tend to reflect that, I tend to picture my world as this small little circle of people. Sometimes I'm amazed when people actually know who I am or know my name. I know their name, but I thought they probably had no clue who I was. I don't know why I tend to think that way sometimes. The reality is that so many people are affected by me everyday. Whether I let someone over in traffic or not may set the tone for their entire day. Sometimes saying hello, or not saying it, can make a difference in the way someone feels about themselves. I can't even imagine how long the list would be if God handed over to me a list of names of people I have affected in my life, whether positively or negatively. I'm sure it would be a huge list. And honestly that scares me. I'm not saying life should be lived as if you are walking on pins and needles, and I'm definitely not claiming that I can go without ever having a bad day. But, how much of an impact could I possibly have if I started thinking about all the little things that are going to affect people and actually putting forth the actions to make a change. It could be the one thing that turns someone's heart around.

  1. I have definitely had similar thoughts before. I always think about the people in the background of my own photos and what their lives must be like. They're forever incorporated into one of my own memories and I always wonder if maybe I made it into the background of one of theirs too! It's such a strange concept to think about, but interesting all the same.

  4. I totally wonder those same things you mentioned, and I do worry about how I've impacted people positive or negative. I know it feels to get snubbed in traffic, so I try not to do the same to others. I know how it feels to have the door shut in my face, so I try to hold it for others. I try to smile at strangers, and I try to be nice to everyone I come in contact with...but there are bad days, and sometimes those bad days get taken out on the wrong people.

  5. This is something that would cross my mind when I lived in Manhattan. It's such a huge city that you see so many different people each day, and yet I'd always be fascinated when I'd see the same people on the subway on my commute to work.

PS You inspired my outfit today on the blog, gave you a shoutout!

  6. I think about this stuff sometimes. I always tell myself if I let someone over in traffic I made some part of their day better.. and if they don't give me the "thanks!" wave I think it harder! LOL. Your post got me thinking though. It's weird to wonder how many backgrounds of photos you're in and how many notes people may have.. or if exes still have your love notes. Cool post

  7. i sometimes think about that, however, i do like to jump in the background of as many pictures as possible, i'm not sure if that counts.
also i do try and be nice to random people because you never know what kind of day they are having despite how my day has gone.
    i love this picture. gorgeous.

  8. Loving this post. I think about this too! It's crazy to think that you will probably never see the person that is standing next to you at a store again in your life etc... It's crazy how one action can change a person's life, day, actions, etc.--without you even knowing it!

  10. i think about that so, so much. sometimes it actually consumes me a tiny bit. it's sobering, for sure...i absolutely want to be certain that people's lingering thoughts of me are kind. it's important to sit on these kinds of questions, because it reminds you just how HUGE of an impact we have on one another. let me just say you've made a great impact on me!

  11. I love this post. I agree. I sometimes think about mind-boggling things like that and it really puts things in perspective. And I try to remind myself that it's in the little things that can make or break someone's day. So I try to be that person that holds the door for another person or help someone with something.

    p.s. great picture!

  17. I completely agree. It is the little things that we do everyday that make an impact. It is so crazy when you really stop and think about how many people's lives we touch on a daily basis. Thanks for sharing.

  18. I ALWAYS think about this! Well, the photograph thing for sure. But you're so right about how many people we affect, it's crazy. I know even my mood affects the people around me, so if I'm sad I can't help but feel guilty for showing it. I don't know whether it's a good thing because then it helps me try not to show it, or a bad thing because you shouldn't really feel guilty for being sad should you... Ah I'm rambling!

Great post Jessica. Very thought provoking!

  20. Couldn't agree more with your post. Everything we do, big or small will always be remembered by someone somewhere in the path of our lives. I moved around a lot as a kid and always wonder if people from back them even remember me? I always do my best to not sweat the small things. Life is too short and the older I get the more appreciation I have for people.

  22. What an interesting thought. We cross paths with so many people that we don't even notice because we are so consumed with out own worries and concerns. All of the countless photos we take are a constant reminder of this.
